Sustainability at the Strandhotel Hohenzollern

At Strandhotel Hohenzollern, we see sustainability as an integral part of our operations and our commitment to future generations. We strive to have a positive impact on our environment through eco-friendly practices and supporting the local community. Our goal is to minimize the environmental footprint of our hotel while providing exceptional service to our guests.
Further steps towards sustainability
These initiatives are part of our commitment not only to offer an outstanding guest experience, but also to use natural resources responsibly and actively contribute to environmental protection.
2020/2021: Energy-saving measures
Our lighting has been completely converted to LED and energy-saving lamps in order to reduce energy consumption. We have also installed a solar system to heat water and recently connected to the district heating network of the town of Borkum.
2022: Support for electromobility
As part of our sustainability efforts, we have installed an electric charging station at the Strandhotel Hohenzollern to support the use of environmentally friendly means of transportation. This initiative allows guests to conveniently charge their electric vehicles during their stay and helps to reduce emissions.
By providing this charging station, we are actively promoting the spread of electromobility and underlining our commitment to environmental protection. We invite our guests to join us in our efforts for a greener future.
2022: Introduction of the green option
At Strandhotel Hohenzollern, we have introduced the Green Option to give our guests the choice of having their towels changed daily. This environmentally friendly measure is designed to reduce the consumption of water and energy. By changing towels less frequently, we can reduce the use of detergents and the energy required for washing and drying, which has a direct positive impact on our environment.
This initiative gives our guests the opportunity to actively participate in our sustainability efforts and helps to raise awareness of the responsible use of resources. We encourage all guests to choose the green option and thus make a joint contribution to environmental protection.
2023: Conversion to induction stoves
In 2023, Strandhotel Hohenzollern made a significant improvement in the kitchen by switching from electric stoves to modern induction stoves. This switch aims to significantly improve energy efficiency in our kitchen. Induction stoves are known to use less energy and heat up faster than conventional electric stoves, which not only saves energy but also makes kitchen work more efficient.
This measure is part of our ongoing commitment to environmental protection and sustainability. By using induction technology, we are reducing our hotel’s carbon footprint and making an active contribution to climate protection. With this investment in more modern and environmentally friendly technologies, we are demonstrating our efforts to continuously reduce the ecological footprint of our operations.
2023: Participation in the "fish share" project
In 2023, Strandhotel Hohenzollern began participating in the “Fischaktie” project, an initiative to promote sustainable fishing practices. Through this commitment, we source sustainably caught fish directly from local fisheries that are committed to minimizing their ecological footprint.
By participating in the fish share, we not only support the conservation of marine biology, but also ensure that the fish on our menu are caught fresh and responsibly. This enables our kitchen to use high-quality, environmentally friendly products and at the same time promotes awareness and appreciation of sustainable fish consumption among our guests.

2024: Installation of a solar system for hot water heating
In 2024, the Strandhotel Hohenzollern made an important investment in sustainable technologies by installing a solar system to heat water. This measure underlines our commitment to environmental protection and the use of renewable energy sources.
By installing the solar system, we harness the power of the sun to cover our hotel’s hot water needs. This not only significantly reduces our energy consumption, but also reduces our dependence on fossil fuels and lowers the CO2 emissions of our operations. The decision to use solar energy is a further step for Strandhotel Hohenzollern on the way to a more sustainable and environmentally conscious hotel operation.
This initiative is part of our ongoing efforts to minimize the hotel’s environmental footprint and actively contribute to a cleaner and greener future.
2024/2025: Connection to the district heating network of the city of Borkum
In 2024 and 2025, Strandhotel Hohenzollern implemented a significant measure to improve energy efficiency and reduce our carbon footprint: the connection to the district heating network of the city of Borkum. This step enables us to obtain the heating energy for our hotel from central, more efficient and environmentally friendly energy sources.
By using district heating, which is often generated from renewable energy sources or through the efficient use of waste heat, we can significantly reduce our energy consumption and further reduce our CO2 emissions. This not only helps to protect the environment, but also improves the sustainability of our operations.
The investment in the connection to the district heating network underlines our ongoing commitment to environmentally conscious hotel management practices and our efforts to position the Strandhotel Hohenzollern as a pioneer in sustainability on the island of Borkum. We are proud to have taken this important step to actively contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases and environmental protection.
