The gentle inhabitants of the North Sea

Seal observations on Borkum

Borkum, the largest of the East Frisian Islands, offers not only a stiff breeze and extensive sandy beaches, but also a very special nature experience: the seal banks. Here you will find around 1,200 seals and harbor seals, the largest free-living predatory mammals in Germany.

Seal Bank "High Reef"

On Borkum’s western beach, you can observe the seals on the “Hohes Riff” seal bank from a safe distance. This sandbank, which is usually only visible at low tide, serves as a resting place for the animals, where they often spend the whole day sunbathing.
